Uruçu Bees:
They are known for being large, robust bees and excellent honey producers. Uruçu is a word that comes from the tupi “eiru su”, which in the indigenous language means “big bee”. Therefore the workers measure from 10mm to 12mm in length.
This species has a tegument with a color ranging from black to rusty, with the body covered with rusty/yellowish hairs.
As Yellow- Uruçu colonies can reach a population of 5 thousand bees. This species preferentially nests in tree hollows. The nest entrance is located in the center of converging clay lanes and allows only one bee to enter or leave at a time. The brood cells are horizontal or helical, not occurring células reais. The envelope is present and is made up of several cerumen membranes. The food pots are about 4 cm high.
Population: 4 thousand to 6 thousand bees.
